House Design in Nepal: Classic vs Modern — Which Is Right for You?
Since 2009, Green Design Nepal has designed homes across Kathmandu Valley and beyond. The first big decision most families face is style: classic or modern? Both can be beautiful — the right choice depends on your taste, budget and how you live.
What is a classic house design?
Classic homes feature symmetrical façades, decorative mouldings, columns, balustrades and often pitched or detailed rooflines. They feel grand and traditional, and many families love how they stand out on the street.
- Best for: families who want a timeless, prestigious look
- Cost: slightly higher — around NPR 5,000 per sq ft with our team
- Keep in mind: decorative details need more care to keep looking fresh
What is a modern house design?
Modern homes use clean lines, flat or simple roofs, large windows and open interiors. They make the most of natural light — a real advantage on the tight urban plots common in Kathmandu.
- Best for: open living, natural light and lower upkeep
- Cost: slightly lower — around NPR 4,700 per sq ft with our team
- Keep in mind: large glass areas need good planning for heat, privacy and earthquake safety
How to choose
1. Start with your plot
Narrow plots and road-facing frontages often suit modern façades. Wider plots with setbacks can show off a classic design well.
2. Think about how you will live
Do you want an open kitchen and family area, or separate formal rooms? Will parents live with you? Do you plan rental floors? Your floor plan matters more than the façade.
3. Plan for the future
Many families build 2 or 2.5 storeys now and add later. A good architect designs the structure for that from day one.
You can also mix both
Many of our clients choose a "modern classic" — clean modern forms with a few traditional touches such as Nepali brickwork or carved wooden windows. It gives character without the full cost of a classic design.
